    About Batting Cages and Tunnels

     1. Nylon vs Polyethylene Net Material
    2. Knotless vs Knotted Nets
    3. Diamond Mesh vs Square Mesh
    4. Net and Rope Twine Size
    5. Batting Cage vs Batting Tunnel
    6. Double Tunnel (Center Divider) Type
    7. Indoor vs Outdoor Use
    8. Freestanding vs In-Ground Frames

Nylon vs Polyethylene (PolyE or HDPE) Net Material

Nylon net material has a higher tear or breaking strength than equivalent size PolyE.
PolyE is about half the strength of nylon.  However, PolyE is considered to have
    greater abrasive resistance than nylon.

Nylon requires water repellent coating to withstand the elements.  If uncoated, nylon
used outdoors can eventually shrink, fade, or rot.  PolyE is less expensive than nylon
and does not absorb water but requires heavier twine for the same breaking
strength, which may actually cost more.

When compared with polyethylene netting, nylon starts out stronger than polyethylene
but deteriorates faster.  Nylon loses between 15% and 20% of its strength each year,
depending on conditions.  By the end of the third year, polyethylene may be as
    strong as the nylon.

Most nets designed for outdoor use will be dark in color.  The darker color helps
improve UV resistance.  Many PolyE nets are made of extruded black material.
Nylon nets are frequently dyed a dark green or black color.

Note:  Do not confuse polyethylene with polypropylene.  Nets and ropes made of
polypropylene will degrade fast in outdoor use, especially in southern areas.

    Knotless (Woven) vs Knotted Nets

Nylon nets are generally made using knotted material.  Some PolyE nets are made
using a knitted or woven material.  Knotted nets are usually stronger than knitted
nets, although knitted nets may be made of a slightly heavier twine to compensate.

    Diamond Mesh vs Square Mesh

Many knotted nets are hung on the square, which ensures the easiest installation and
eliminates sag.  Most knitted mesh nets are hung on the diamond, which will absorb
the blows of balls hitting against it over several meshes.

    Net and Rope Twine Size

One of the most confusing aspects of comparing net products is the issue of twine
size.  Different manufacturers may use different codes to indicate the size of the
twine used in the net.  As a rule, the smaller the number the thinner the twine.  A #12
twine is about one-half the size of a #24 twine.

A #18 twine may be called N18 by another manufacturer, or a 2100 by yet another.
The following table may help in comparing the different codes.

Standard US Size

Actual Size

Other Codes

Uses

#12 1.7 mm #1500
#15 1.8 mm
#18 1.9 mm #2100 Minimum size for batting cages
#21 2.0 mm N21, #30 Kevloy Better, but not commercial grade
#24 2.1 mm
#30 2.3 mm   Light duty commercial grade
#36 2.5 mm N36, #4000 Very good, commercial quality
#42 2.7 mm #42 Kevloy Best, for heavy use (pro & commercial)
#48 2.8 mm
#60 3.0 mm #7200
#72 3.5 mm
#84 4.0 mm

Cages an tunnels are usually constructed with border ropes stitched to the net.  The
ropes are commonly of 5/16" polyethylene and will incorporate three top ropes (one
on each side and one in the middle), corner ropes, and bottom ropes, which help
keep the net hanging square.  The corners and top ropes will have at least a 6' tie-off
    tail.

    Batting Cage vs Batting Tunnel

The terms "batting cage" and "batting tunnel" are used almost interchangeably.
However, a batting cage is usually much smaller than a batting tunnel and may be
open at one end or have some sort of portal cut into the net at one end so that a
baseball may be pitched through the opening,  Many batting cages are portable
and may be rolled into position whenever needed, such as the cages used at home
    plate during pre-game batting practice.

A batting tunnel is long, usually from 50-70 feet in length and the pitcher or pitching
machine is located inside the tunnel with the batter.

    Double Tunnel (Center Divider)

Some batting tunnels may be divided in two by means of a center net curtain so that
more than one activity, such as soft toss exercises or hitting from a tee can take
place inside the tunnel without the risk of being hit by a batted or thrown ball.
Divided tunnels are usually at least 70' in length.

    Indoor VS Outdoor Use

Batting cages and tunnels will last much longer if used indoors.  Nylon nets will
eventually absorb moisture, even when coated with water repellent coatings, and
will deteriorate.  All materials will deteriorate over time when exposed to constant
sunlight, even though UV inhibitors may be  incorporated into the material.

    Freestanding vs In-ground Frame

Many batting cages and some batting tunnels may be used with freestanding
frames.  The chief advantage to a freestanding frame is relative portability (some
systems are easier to put up and take down than others).  However, a freestanding
frame may not be as heavily constructed as an frame designed to be installed in the
ground with concrete footings.  The in-ground structure is less likely to be damaged
by high-winds or other weather-related problems and may be able to take more
punishment from heavy use due to its heavier frame.
